(A program of school broadcast)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Praise be to Allah who seized praise for himself and decreed it on His Creation in Whose Hands the forelocks of everything, and the destiny of everything is up to Him. The strong in His Power and the Ever-Kindly in His Omnipotence, there is no withholder to things which He grants and no giver for things which he withholds. The Creator of creation with His Ability and who subjects them by His Will. I bear witness that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the elected one from among His Creation and His Trustee on His Revelation. He sent Him to command people with good, forbid them from evil, and call them to the truth.
The phenomenon of private lessons have spread recently and no home is free of it.
We, in this day ( ……. ) corresponding ( ……. ) of month ( ……. ) of year ( ……. ) here to talk with you about private lessons.
First, we shall begin with the Glorious Qur’an:
The Glorious Qur’an Allah (may He be Exalted) says: “It is not lawful for you (to marry other) women after this, nor to change them for other wives even though their beauty attracts you, except those (captives or slaves) whom your right hand possesses. And Allah is Ever a Watcher over all things. * O you who believe! Enter not the Prophet’s houses, except when leave is given to you for a meal, (and then) not (so early as) to wait for its preparation. But when you are invited, enter, and when you have taken your meal, disperse, without sitting for a talk. Verily, such (behavior) annoys the Prophet, and he is shy of (asking) you (to go), but Allah is not shy of (telling you) the truth. And when you ask (his wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen, that is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. And it is not (right) for you that you should annoy Allah’s Messenger, nor that you should ever marry his wives after him (his death). Verily! With Allah that shall be an enormity. * Whether you reveal anything or conceal it, verily, Allah is Ever All-Knower of everything.” [Surat Al Ahzab: 52 – 54].
We take light from the Prophetic Hadiths:
Hadith: Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Frequently remember the destroyer of pleasures: i.e., death.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhy].
Here are our morning words:
The phenomenon of private lessons:
The phenomenon of private lessons has spread in all of academic stages after they were limited to high school stage because of the desire of parents that their children would get high marks to enter high colleges. Of course, not all parents can provide private lessons for their children, as they depend on the income of citizens where there are families that cannot provide education for their children because of their low living standards. However, private lessons are now invading all academic phases from primary school until mid-school. They have become a new concern added to the concerns of families after the academic level of students have become weak and private lessons became a basis to succeed.
As for excellent students, they resort to them to achieve excellence, which is their sole right, but the problem is that private lessons in recent years have entered the world of bourse and their prices became imaginary despite the improvement of teachers’ salaries in compare to the earlier. There are questions imposing themselves in this issue.
Why private lessons are taken in the first place?
What are the causes which made a student log into the way of private lessons?
Why do not you reckon teachers who give private lessons and expose them to legal accountability?
All these questions need satisfactory answers to treat this phenomenon which recently exacerbated. One of the female teachers says: The reason for multi private lessons traces back to the lack of the family’s follow-up to students because of their busyness with the concerns of life and their hard conditions. She says: The final stage is a clincher for students, so they resort to private lessons to understand the subject and get higher degrees.
Another says: Modern technology which have appeared is the biggest reason in increasing the phenomenon of private lessons, where students are busy in mobiles and the Internet, forgetting their duties in regard to study and future, so they resort to private lessons to make up what they missed.
Another adds: The reason is the teacher because teaching was not perfectly performed and does not substitute for private lessons.
Let us stand with this question:
Why do student resort to private lessons?
The phenomenon of private lessons is not recreational or resulted from untrue incentives but it is like other rising social phenomena in light of new conditions and positions that control the entire area.
Professor Hamid Tahir, the professor of Islamic philosophy and ethics in Cairo University, says: The phenomenon of private lessons is responsible for three elements: The first is the teacher who cannot deliver information clearly and easily to students. The second is the student who does not understand well and asks his parents to take private lessons. The third element is the parents who respond to the wish of the son or daughter and bear the expenses of private lessons.
Accordingly, the spread of such phenomenon traces back to the negligence of the teacher in addition to schoolbooks which need a comprehensive revolution in terms of division, explanation, indexing, and explaining difficult terms. The subject must be associated with illustrative images, data, pictures, maps, and good production to create a bond between a student and schoolbooks, so students will not resort to helping books as soon as the academic year begins, moreover we need a new look to the system of questions.
Private lessons have become a routine phenomenon during recent years. It has become natural that a student resorts to private lessons without seeing the teacher or his performance, and private lessons have become the prevailing concept to achieve high degrees.
Professor Hamid Tahir added that from among the factors which contributed in creating the generation of private lessons is the stereotype of the test and the ability of the teachers of private lessons to expect and guess the questions of the test. Consequently, a student resorts to them to get high degrees, but the biggest and dangerous problem is that private lessons create a reluctant student who does not pay attention to what is going on inside the classroom or the explanation of the teacher because he has a replacement outside school.
Now we are listening to the impacts of private lessons on the family:
The impact of private lessons on the family:
Professor Mahmoud Al Hadary, one of education experts, confirms that the phenomenon of private lessons has destroyed the maxim of equal opportunities and planted separation among students in a period that is the most beautiful and characterized by hastening to private lessons which students receive in different stages of education until college.
These private lessons cost a lot but the matter does not stop at that limit but it extends to something bigger to contribute with other elements in forming what is called family confusion.
By the beginning of academic school in general, and the season of tests approaches in particular, parents are possessed by a state of fear for their children so that they would fail in a subject from the first day, they think how to make them succeed in their school, and the result is private lessons. Here the chaos takes place in keeping family responsibilities such as food, going out, sleep, and general meetings, or even social duties within the big family.
There is no doubt that the first affected of private lessons is the student. The psychological impact is severer as it is limited to tension, fear, and worry, but extends to giving a student a set of psychological behavior that accompany him for a long period of time if it does not go along with him to his entire life.
The worst impact of private lessons is the spirit of negligence and not getting ready for focusing with teachers inside the class, whereas he receives information in capsules from private teachers.
Professors Muhammad Al Hadary added: There is a static fact which is the negative background on students and turning them into a recording machine by receiving model answers without activating his mind. Here the question arises: Is this the education which students should have?
How much a student shall benefit from study?
In conclusion, these are private lessons with their good and bad, so balance between your needs and be sure that students should first depend on Allah then themselves then their families which will substitute private lessons.
And As-Salamu `Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh (May Allah’s Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!)
