Goals and values

There is much talk about values and their importance in the lives of individuals and groups because of their close connection and impact on individuals’ behaviors and goals. They exert efforts equivalent with the value of the goals they heed to. The meaning of value here is the estimation and interests of an individual through static criteria and accumulated practice with his goal. That makes him feel that he has natural justifications and strong logical reasons that push him to that goal. Values, by this consideration, are general guidelines for attitudes and references by which a person abide when he adopts certain behaviors. These values define what a person considers as true or ethical. They provide him with the criteria that guide him in his daily life and help him in forming his attitudes toward different issues. We cannot ignore the role of values that an individual adopts in the choice of the individuals with whom he deals to achieve his goals. General values have powerful effect on identifying the individual’s objectives and on adopting behaviors to achieve them.

Within work organizations, we adopt some values that are part of the values which we have and called them “the work values”. They are a set of behavioral guidelines that determine the behaviors of an individual within his work in terms of choosing this work, his objectives, performance and achievement of his goals. Of those values are the following: Integrity in work, honesty, truthfulness, sincerity, loyalty and good fulfillment and other. They are all effective – no doubt – on the behavior and general performance of employees. Based on the above-mentioned, if we were to interpret functional actions and behaviors, we have to search for the motives for that and understand the set of values that govern such behavior and try to control them in order to achieve the goals in the context of healthy values that produce healthy behaviors.

Thus, an individual is subject during performing his work to values that determine the forms of performance and results. Therefore, we, as practitioners of management, want to form a good understanding to the problems of work, conflicts between workers, communication barriers, their low morale, the rates of overall performance, and other labor problems to:start first to identify the values of work within our organizations, then determine the extent of their integration with the values that our employees adhere to. Then, we can avoid a large number of labor problems and help us to establish an effective system for the selection process, through conciliation between the values of individuals and the requirements of the job to achieve the objectives of the organization. Objectives are linked with the quality of values taking into consideration that these values should be ethical to achieve acceptable objectives.
