Question
I was reading in a book that a person has to stop thinking sometimes to bring about peace of mind. So, how can I stop thinking? By trying to stop thinking, I am thinking about the way to stop thinking.
What is the effect of this method if it is true?
Thank you.
Answer
As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah’s Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!)
I do not think that anyone can stop thinking particularly if you command him to do so, and I challenge you to stop thinking right now about a blue bear.
Perhaps the intention of the writer from stop thinking is to stop discussing the matters that we pass through in our life: The past and its memories and the future and its concerns; and this is correct. If you try to cut off half an hour everyday of your time, walk in a quiet place if you like the walking sport, and think in the greatness of Allah (may He be Exalted) and His beautiful creation, His Mercy with His Servants, His Generosity and Wisdom. If you really engage yourself in this thinking truly, you shall renew your soul after this session of relaxation and meditation.
As you know, meditation is one of the deserted acts of worship these days despite its great influence on the soul and the body; this is a call to all of us to revive this great Sunnah.
