Should we believe in Jinn Stories that seem too farfetched?

Question

As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah’s Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!). One of the weirdest stories I’ve ever heard is about a man whom was guarded by a Jinn that admired him. It caused him trouble whenever he went to see a girl for marriage. Like, Traffic accidents would happen to him or to one of his brothers, or one of the machines which he was in charge of at his work would start burning. One time, the Jinn set his whole house on fire except two copies of the Glorious Qur’an that were above the desk never got burnt, then he fell asleep and when he woke up, he found the house returned to its original condition. The Jinn speaks with his fiancée on the phone and threatens to harm him more if she does not break up with him. Moreover, the man claimed that the Jinn showed up to him and he saw it with his own eyes and his brother saw it too. What is your opinion in this strange story which is not mentally accepted? Could you sustain your answer with proofs so as to be sure and not to let anyone fool us, especially, the Muslim girls who are fooled by these stories. I let you speak about this topic and clarify the matter for those who do not know it. May Allah reward you the best!

Answer

All praise be to Allah and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family, his Companions, and those who follow him.

If what you mentioned was true, it is a kind of marriage between jinn and humans which is proven by the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and Ijma` (consensus of scholars), in addition it is tangible and cannot be denied except by an ignorant, unreasonable, or those who deny the Qur’an and the Sunnah. Allah (may He be Exalted) says:

“Those who eat Ribâ (usury) will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaitân (Satan) leading him to insanity.” [Surat Al Baqarah: 275].

It was reported in the authentic books of the Sunnah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “And Satan circulates in the body of Adam’s offspring as his blood circulates in it.”

`Abdullah, the son of Imam Ahmad said: I told my father that some people do not believe that jinns do not enter in the body of the epileptics.

He said: “O son, they are telling lies; jinns put words on their tongues.”

The Shaykh of Islam, Ibn Taymiyah, said: “No scholar denies that jinn enters the body of an epileptic and others and whoever denies that and claims that the Shari`ah denies that is attributing lies to the Shari`ah because there is no proof to negate that.” [Majmu` Al Fatawa].

As for what has been mentioned in your message regarding the incidents which happen to that man, it seems that he did not follow the proper means to stop them and did not immunize himself and his house from the devils.

The Shaykh of Islam, Ibn Taymiyah, said: “Devils control those who do not mentioned the name of Allah such as the those who do not mention Allah upon entering the house, upon eating, or when they save some money because devils may steal some of it as happened to a lot of people.” [An-Nubuwwat].

Imam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah show mercy to him) added: “Devils have a goal which is to spread what Allah (Glory be to Him) forbade, such as: Disbelief, lasciviousness, and disobedience. Moreover, they find pleasure in spreading evil and turmoil even if there is no benefit in that for them.”

Therefore, those who know this man should advise him to keep to the following:

1- Reciting Surah Al Fatihah [The Opening Chapter].

2- Reciting Ayat-ul-Kursy (the Qur’anic Verse of Allah’s Chair, Surah Al Baqarah, 2:255) from Surat Al Baqarah, which reads:

“Allâh! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyuum (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists). Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursî extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.” [Surat Al Baqarah: 255].

3- Reciting the Ayahs of Al A`raf, which reads:

“And We revealed to Mûsâ (Moses) (saying): “Throw your stick,” and behold! It swallowed up straight away all the falsehood which they showed. * Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect. * So they were defeated there and returned disgraced. * And the sorcerers fell down prostrate. *Saying: “We believe in the Lord of the ‘Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists). * The Lord of Mûsâ (Moses) and Hârûn (Aaron).” [Surat Al A`raf: 117 – 122].

4- Reciting Ayahs from Surat Yunus, which reads:

“And when the sorcerers came, Mûsâ(Moses) said to them: “Cast down what you want to cast!” * Then when they had cast down, Mûsâ (Moses) said: “What you have brought is sorcery; Allâh will surely make it of no effect. Verily, Allâh does not set right the work of Al-Mufsidûn (the evil-doers, corrupters). * And Allâh will establish and make apparent the truth by His Words, however much the Mujrimûn (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners) may hate (it).” [Surat Yunus: 80 – 82].

5- Reciting Ayahs from Surat Taha, which reads:

“We (Allâh) said: “Fear not! Surely, you will have the upper hand. * And throw that which is in your right hand! It will swallow up that which they have made. That which they have made is only a magician’s trick, and the magician will never be successful, to whatever amount (of skill) he may attain.” [Surat Taha: 68 – 69].

6- Reciting Surat Al Kafirun.

7- Reciting Surat Al Ikhlas and Al Mu`awwidhatayn (Surahs Al Falaq and An-Nas) and repeating them frequently.

8- Reciting some supplications such as: “O Allah! The Lord of the people, (Please) cure (Heal) (this patient), for You are the Healer. None brings about healing but You; a healing that will leave behind no ailment.”

We advise him to see the booklet of “Hisn Al Muslim Wal Ruqyah Al Shar`iyyah” of Al Qahtany.

9- Persistence on Adhkar (invocations and Remembrances said at certain times on a regular basis) that is recited in the morning and in the evening because they contain supplication to protect one’s family and money.

10- To throw anything forbidden out of the house and recite Surat Al Baqarah frequently in the house and you may use cassette tapes or a computer because of the Prophet’s saying: “Do not turn your houses into graveyards. Indeed, Satan runs away from the house in which Surat Al Baqarah is recited.” [Reported by Muslim].

And because of the Prophet’s saying: “Recite Surat Al Baqarah for to take recourse to it is a blessing, and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the Batalah cannot confront it.” (Mu`awiyah said: It has been conveyed to me that here Batalah means sorcerers.)[Reported by Muslim].

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Close doors, cover vessels, waterskins, extinguish the lamps, for Satan does not open doors, does not loosen the waterskin, and does not uncover the vessels.” [Reported by Muslim].

It was reported in Sahih Al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from the Hadith of Jabir that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Close your door, mention the name of Allah, extinguish your lamp and mention the name of Allah, tie your vessels and mention the name of Allah, cover your utensils and mention the name of Allah, and if you do not have something to cover your utensil you may put across it something (e.g. a piece of wood etc.)”

He may search for a pious person to recite the Qur’an to him and treat him with Ruqyah(reciting Qur’an and saying supplications over the sick seeking healing).
